Shooting in Miami
Based in South Florida and producing yacht photography and video since 2006, we know how quickly conditions can change across Miami’s waterways. Miami offers ocean access, Biscayne Bay, recognizable architecture, islands, sandbars and city skylines within one production area. We plan each route around the yacht’s draft, weather, tides, airspace, production priorities and available shooting time.
Best for
- Sales-listing photography Charter-lifestyle content Yacht video production Running shots Drone photography and video City and skyline backgrounds Sandbar and anchorage scenes Marine brand campaigns
Advantages
Diverse shooting locations
Miami offers ocean, bay, island, sandbar and city settings within one production area. This gives us more opportunities to create a varied collection of exterior, lifestyle and running imagery without leaving South Florida.
Recognizable Miami backgrounds
Star Island, Monument Island, Hibiscus Island, Fisher Island, downtown Miami, Marine Stadium and the Miami River provide distinctly Miami backgrounds. The river and downtown areas can be especially effective for evening photography.
Southern Biscayne Bay locations
South of the Rickenbacker Causeway, we can explore running-shot and lifestyle locations around Nixon Sandbar, Stiltsville and the open waters of Biscayne Bay. When weather and scheduling permit, production may extend toward Fowey Rocks Lighthouse.
Lifestyle anchoring opportunities
Sandbars and shallow areas inside Biscayne Bay can provide attractive anchoring and lifestyle settings for smaller yachts. These locations work best during favorable tides, with bright conditions and when the yacht’s draft permits safe access.
Flexible aerial opportunities
Many Miami waterfront locations can support aerial photography with proper planning. Drone routes can capture the yacht alongside open water, islands, coastal architecture and the downtown skyline, subject to current airspace and operating requirements.
Ocean and Biscayne Bay running shots
The ocean side of Haulover Inlet provides strong opportunities for running shots with the Sunny Isles skyline, Porsche Design Tower and the pier nearby. From Indian Creek toward the NE 79th Street Causeway, sections of the Intracoastal Waterway and Biscayne Bay provide room for yachts to come onto plane. Water color is often better than in more enclosed South Florida waterways, particularly with favorable light, tide and weather. Conditions at Haulover Inlet must always be evaluated before filming.
Considerations
Water color varies by location
Miami generally offers some of the best water color within the three-county South Florida area because of its major inlets and Biscayne Bay. However, it should not be expected to match the consistent clarity and turquoise color of the Bahamas or Caribbean.
Tides and yacht draft affect access
Sandbars and shallow-water anchorages may only be suitable at certain stages of the tide. The yacht’s draft must be reviewed before including these locations in the production plan.
Inlet and offshore conditions
Haulover Inlet and offshore areas can become rough depending on wind, tide and current. Routes and shooting positions may need to change on the day to protect the yacht, crew, talent and production equipment.
Marine traffic and wake restrictions
Busy waterways, bridges, marine traffic and no-wake zones can affect timing and limit where a yacht can safely operate at speed. Early starts and carefully planned routes usually provide the best opportunities.
Drone operations require planning
Although many Miami locations are workable for drone production, airspace restrictions, nearby airports, temporary flight restrictions and local conditions must be checked for every shoot. Some operations may require advance authorization or an adjusted route.
Not every location fits one shoot
Miami offers many possible backgrounds, but they cannot all be covered during a typical production. Travel time, bridges, light, weather, tides and the yacht’s speed determine which locations can realistically be included.
Our recommendation
Choose Miami when you want the strongest variety of yacht photography and video settings available in South Florida. It is particularly effective for productions combining running shots, recognizable city backgrounds, aerial imagery and selected lifestyle scenes. We recommend creating a focused route based on the yacht’s draft, weather and most important marketing goals rather than trying to cover every location in one day. For a campaign centered entirely on secluded anchorages and consistently clear turquoise water, the Bahamas or Caribbean remains the stronger choice.
Questions
Shooting in Miami, answered
Where are the best locations for yacht photography in Miami?
The best route depends on the yacht, weather and production goals. Frequently used locations include Haulover Inlet, Biscayne Bay, Star Island, Monument Island, Fisher Island, Marine Stadium, downtown Miami, Nixon Sandbar and Stiltsville. A typical shoot focuses on a smaller group of locations rather than attempting to cover the entire area.
Can drone photography and video be used during a Miami yacht shoot?
Many Miami waterfront locations can support drone photography and video, but every operation must be checked for controlled airspace, temporary flight restrictions, nearby airports and local operating conditions. Some routes may require advance authorization or adjustment on the day.
Can Miami provide clear turquoise water for yacht photography?
Miami often provides some of the best water color in South Florida, particularly near major inlets and in parts of Biscayne Bay. Conditions vary with weather, tide, current and location, and the water should not be expected to match the consistent clarity of the Bahamas or Caribbean.
How many Miami shooting locations can be covered in one day?
The number depends on the yacht’s speed, draft, bridge access, weather, tides and the production brief. Most successful shoots use a focused route built around the most important sales or charter-marketing objectives rather than trying to cover every possible location.
Is Miami suitable for both sales-listing and charter-lifestyle productions?
Yes. Miami works well for sales-listing photography, running shots, aerial imagery and recognizable city backgrounds. Selected sandbars and anchorages can support lifestyle content when the yacht’s draft and conditions allow. For campaigns centered entirely on secluded anchorages and consistently clear water, the Bahamas or Caribbean may be a stronger choice.
